“Iron Man” the Stark Superhero of Marvel

Genres: Action/Adventure, Science Fiction/Fantasy and Adaptation Release Date: May 2nd, 2008 (wide) MPAA Rating: PG-13 for some intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, and brief suggestive content. Distributors: Paramount Pictures

Director: Jon Favreau

JJ Rating: A+

Billionaire Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) of Stark Enterprises visits Afghanistan to show off his new weapon. Upon being attacked by rebels he sees his weapons were in their hands. They kidnapped him and wanted him to make them a weapon, but instead he creates a suit that will evolve him into Iron Man.

It’s another billionaire hero. In this case one that is more deviant than the Bat and far wittier than the Spider. Iron Man is exactly that: he’s a man’s man. He sleeps around, he drinks and he is cockier than necessary and he doesn’t even get paid millions to play a sport. Well he gets billions to create inventive weaponry for America.

Iron Man was never my cup of tea. But when I heard that Robert Downey Jr. was going to play him I was sure that if there ever was a thing like cinematic perfection, that that was it. From that point on I was excited to see the film. I was even more excited when I saw the concept art of Iron Man and then the actual look. So fantastic that it just gave me chills to see it. I had not felt like that since X-Men and Spider-Man…well that’s not too long ago, but still.

What would I want more from this film? I can’t really think of anything. It’s not perfect but what movie is? It’s just really good. I wanted to see the Black Widow somehow but that was not going to happen. I’m really pleased with the after credits scene. STA Y AFTER THE CREDITS.

What did I love about the film? Iron Man’s suit. That suit was so freaking cool. I loved the way it looked, how it was put on, what it looked like in flight, how it sounded when it moved about, how it looked when it was damaged. It was just wow. I liked how Iron Man was just intelligent and figured out to do the practical thing without taking too much time to moralize everything. He saw the end that he wanted and he did everything he could to achieve that end. I like the wit of Tony Stark and how Robert Downey Jr. just perfectly fit the role as if he were born to play it.

Terrence Howard mad a great Rohdey. War Machine. When he sees the suit that is left behind there is that perfect pause of should I or shouldn’t I and it just makes a comic nerd giddy with anticipation. As-a-matter-of-fact there were several scenes that just make a comic nerd giddy. Count them off, if you can. Jeff Bridges was intimidating and imposing as he needed to be to play Obadiah. Shaun Toub played the frail man who was Tony’s captive buddy well with fear, as he should. Gwyneth Paltrow was Pepper Potts and had the charm and smile to pull it off. I liked the way she walked to. It might have had something to do with her shoes, but still it seemed so intentional for the character and it worked.

The story progressed at an even pace and allowed for the development of the entire story within the allotted time. Jon Favreau (who also played the driver who, in the comics, becomes Pepper’s love interest) did an iron clad job of directing. He knew what he wanted and executed it and it came out beautifully.

The C.G.I. work was eye candy for the super soul. That Iron Man get up was just marvelous. The battles between Iron Man and anyone else was done well. There was not too much and there was not too little. Just like baby bear’s porridge. The C.G.I. even helped with some humor moments that were littered throughout the film either by visual gags or witty lines; humor was not missing from the banter heighten Stark.

Iron Man, the superhero, is a fine balance of cocky, womanizing, billionaire war mongrel with a touch of heroics all rolled into one likeable man. It is simply a work of art. Normally such a person is the villain and not well liked, but not only is he liked in the comic books he’s liked in the movie and that is thanks to Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal.

Tony has issue with his heart after an accident and his captive buddy creates something that keeps his heart working without interruption. But Tony improves upon it and that’s why he has a glowing chest because of the magnetic works. I saw that in the film and wanted a shirt just like that. No title that says Iron Man, just the glowing orb like circle on the chest. Those in the know will know. Those kinds of shirts rock; no explanation needed.

Iron Man created an excited me. I just was all kinds of amped to see it and I tried not to get too amped up because I didn’t want to work to disappointment. But I caught a couple of positive reviews and saw the grades and how it was getting raves and I was exciting myself up more. The day went by slow and when I finally was sitting in the theater and the entire film was over, including the credit scene, I was far from disappointed. I was impressed. This is the first movie that Marvel has financed themselves and let’s just say…it works magical wonders for them to have more power.

There is no question that I will get Iron Man when it comes out on DVD. There is also no question that this will be the number one movie of the weekend and I even guessed that it would make a little over the amount of money it cost to make it. So I’m going to guess about $165 million dollars. Though because of Grand Theft Auto 4 it might be lower, a lot lower or so the nay sayers would scream. Iron Man is the nity-gritty hero, the one that is all bare on who he is and what he wants; he is Marvel’s Stark Superhero and Iron Man is the start of a beautiful movie franchise.

whoa! you only rated it 8.5???
let me tell you 1 thing, it was great, but not perfect
i like the action, humor, and the fact that it is a
superhero movie, but you have to admit, you were
a little dissapointed that there was very little action...
but not 2 little, mind u, the storyline was cool, but
had a cliche which goes like this:"best friend actually involved w/ the enemy, romance, blah blah blah..."
im not mad at the movie, it just could have been better

I don't know if I'm quite allowed to agree with the incredibly enthusiastic reviews and hype about Jon Favreau's 'Iron Man', but here goes: It's overrated. Completely and utterly. Slick editing, great special effects and cocky humor do not make a movie. 'Iron Man' is a movie with a plot so frustratingly formulaic and such thinly created supporting characters that by the end I was simply angry at the film. So much wasted potential...I've never been a fan of Robert Downey, Jr., but when a movie has the combined efforts of maginificents like Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard, it gains my attention. But the characters are clumsily written cliches, every one of them besides the protagonist, who I was confused to find that people actually found compelling. Just because a character is a flawed jackass does not automatically make him ingeniously created and a fascinating character study. It seems as though Downey sleeps through this performance...there is so little effort put into it, he just slaps on a dumb smile and plays the sarcastic drunken louse he seems to play in every other movie he's in.
Sure, the film's mildly entertaining, but to what end? The superhero genre is currently running on empty (excepting 2005's 'Batman' movie) and Iron Man simply establishes its place in movie genres as predictable and filled with mindless action. I mean, there's the inevitable "OMFG I FLY LIKE A BIRDY" scene, and the chinsy romance, etc. You get my point, I disliked the movie, maybe you won't, but either way, the movie that has grossed hundreds of millions of dollars and earned oodles of critical lovin' is just not all it has been made out to be. It's a sleek, nice-looking Friday Popcorn Movie, nothing more.

I am not one for superhero movies, having been brought up in a house where my brother and father are both equally obsessed with comic books and the idols they feature. Naturally, being a girl, I wish to be nothing like my geeky male relatives. However, when Ironman came out, my father and brother somehow talked me into going to see the movie with them. We chose a seat in the back row and I muched on my popcorn in an aggravated way. In my naivete, I believed the best part of the movie would be the popcorn.

Oh how wrong I was. Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr, is introduced as a billionare who makes his money by designing weapons for the U.S. army. You would think that a highly intelligent, weapons-of-mass-destruction designing, multi-millionare would be a highly unlikable charcter. You would be wrong, my friend. Tony Stark is incredibly likeable, for he has an explosive personality complete with witty comments at just the right time and typical male habits like hanging around the house in his boxers. These habits make him sufficiently more likeable and believeable.

Another great charcter is Pepper Potts, Ironman's maid of sorts. She is played by Gwyneth Paltrow and is the perfect blend of insistent ("Mr. Stark, you really should rest"), loyal (reaching into Stark's chest to pull out the heart-replacement thing when it is failing), and quirky (she always has the perfect comeback to Stark's sarcastic quips). Just the way Paltrow holds herself and throws herself 100% into character made the part enjoyable.

Overall, I was surprised by how much I liked Ironman. I mean I really, really liked it! And for someone who was completely turned off to superhero movies by that steaming pile of crap "The Hulk" that they tried to pass off as a movie in 2004, i believe. Ironman gave me hope that superhero movies are not all cheesy, overly action-filled, zest-lacking films.

When i had first saw the previews i was not sure about it. it was just weird at first. when i saw the movie in theatres it did not match up to what i thought it was going to be comparing it to the movie preview they showed on TV. i do think they can do a better job at creating the movie and put a little effort in it. when i had got done watching it i thought it was an okay movie. if your not picky about your movies i would say you can see this. i do not think this would be my first choice on buying this movie.
